Archaeological Museum and Art Gallery of the Malatesta Palace<\/h2>\n

Fano’s civic collections are housed inside the monumental Malatesta Palace, commissioned by Pandolfo III Malatesta and built in the first half of the 15th century. Enter the palace from Piazza XX Settembre, crossing the ancient Borgia-Cybo Arch and passing through the hallway. Before continuing down the grand staircase, the eye is enraptured by the beauty of the overlooking Corte Malatestiana.<\/p>\n

The tour itinerary is divided through sixteen rooms, and is divided into four main areas: the Archaeological Section, the Ceramics Section and the Numismatics Section, the Fireplace Room, the Great Hall, the two small rooms of the Washbasin Room, and the so-called Morganti Room, the latter of which are intended for the Picture Gallery.<\/p>\n

The museum thus documents a vast chronological span: from prehistoric and protohistoric finds from the Fano area to the Roman period of Fanum Fortunae, from the valuable collection of paintings of the local, Venetian, Bolognese and Roman schools of the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries to contemporary art.<\/p>\n

The original core of the collections dates back to the 18th century and consists of archaeological finds from discoveries, works from churches in the area, acquired following the suppression of corporations and ecclesiastical bodies, to which bequests and donations were added over time.<\/p>\n\n

The Basilica of Vitruvius<\/h2>\n <\/div>\n
\n

Marcus Vitruvius Pollio, author of the renowned De Architectura<\/i>, is considered one of the most important architectural theorists of the ancient world. His work formed one of the pillars on which Western architectural culture was based for centuries.<\/p>\n

In his treatise, Vitruvius describes only one building that he claims to have personally designed and directly supervised: the Basilica of Fano. And here comes the most extraordinary discovery: during excavations in the historic centre, in the area of Piazza Andrea Costa, the basilica described by Vitruvius was identified with certainty, bringing to light a fundamental piece of Roman Fano.<\/p>\n

For centuries, even in the absence of remains that could be attributed with certainty, the description in De Architectura<\/i>had allowed scholars to imagine its form and features. Today, with the archaeological identification of the building, that ancient account is finally intertwined with the real city, further enhancing Fano\u2019s historical prestige: a place where the words of Vitruvius have at last found confirmation in stone.<\/p>\n
