City of Vitruvius

Fano city of Vitruvius, cradle of art and culture

Fano, the city of fortune for the legendary temple (the Fanum Fortunae) who gave it its name, is also the city of Augustus for the monumental honorary door (theArch of Augustus) and the walls with which the first emperor had the “colony” he built after commissioning the famous architect Vitruvius to embellish its hole with an imposing Basilica. As the centuries pass, here is medieval Fano with the Romanesque Cathedral and the imposing Palace of the Podestà of Magister Paulutius and, again, the Fano of the Malatesta with its Rocca, the majestic Arche Tombali and the striking quadrilateral of the Corte Malatestiana.

Overlooking the main square, characterized by the “Fountain of Fortune,” is the neoclassical Theater of the same name with its splendid hall by Luigi Poletti. And, all around, within the circle of the historic center, streets and alleys that trace the paths of the ancient cardi and decumani.
